In the Midst of Battle - Civil War Reenactment - Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park - Arkansas - Dec 4, 2016
Smoke rolling, cannons firing, the smell of gun powder. A moment from our history recreated and captured in a moment. This Captain overseeing his troops as the battle was laid before him, encased in a cloud of smoke with the cool crispness of the air mingled with gun powder, adding a small glimpse into the past. These moments must be remembered, even recreated so we might learn from where we have come. - William Rainey

A Fall Sunset - Cossatot State Park - The State Parks of Arkansas - Nov 2016
There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been! - Percy Bysshe Shelley
Be sure to look at this photo at full size and you will notice small things that effected how the photo was taken. For instance the angle of the water to the relation of the colorful trees in the back, the sunset uplighting the clouds with its subtle pinks and blues, and how it reflected off the top pool of water. The length of shutter to smooth the water out and yet not blow out the sky, all of this with only a few shots to get it right before the color was gone.arkansasvisitarkansasautumnfallwaterfallsunsetartphotographynature
Storm Over the Cossatot - Cossatot State Park - Sept 14, 2016
Luck would have it that I was in the area, and so what started out as a no shoot day, everything lined up. All I had to do is wade in the water and pray that the lighting stayed away, once the color began to pop the trick was to find the angle. I was here so long that it got dark on me and I was still in the middle lol. Just another day (night) in beautiful Arkansas. :)

Little Missouri Falls Area - Little Missouri River - Ouachita National Forest
The Little Missouri flows in a generally north-to-south direction through Pike, Clark, and Montgomery on the western side of the Ouachita River. The Little Missouri River is south of, and runs parallel to, the Caddo River, before flowing into the Ouachita River above Camden, Arkansas. The largest tributary of the Little Missouri River is the Antoine River. The Little Missouri River is intermittently navigable to small boats below its confluence with the Antoine River, although it is rarely used.
The Little Missouri River is dammed by Narrows Dam and forms Lake Greeson. The upper stretches of the Little Missouri River above Lake Greeson descend 1,035 feet in 29 miles (315 m in 47 km) for an average drop of 35 feet per mile (6.6 m/km). This makes the upper waters of the river excellent for experienced canoers. There is a 4.4-mile (7.1 km) long segment that has been designated as a wild river. This segment contains the Winding Stair Rapid, which is classified as a Class IV rapid on the International Scale of River Difficulty. Another attraction on the upper river is Little Missouri Falls, a staircasestep fall that attracts photographers and visitors. The upper reaches of the Little Missouri were considered so scenic that the area was once approved by Congress to become Ouachita National Park, until this action was vetoed by President Herbert Hoover. The watershed of the Little Missouri River is quite small, which means that its upper reaches ordinarily contain little water during the dry summer months.
The Little Missouri River is a superior fishing stream for rainbow trout, green sunfish, longear sunfish, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, and other species. The area below the dam at Lake Greeson is most popular for trout fishermen.
Portions of the Little Missouri River flow through the Ouachita National Forest, and the lower segment flows past the Crater of Diamonds State Park. The Albert Pike Campground provides camping facilities for visitors to the area.
The Little Missouri is listed as a "Wild and Scenic River" by the United States Forest Service. The upper reaches of the river are designated as an "Arkansas Natural and Scenic River" by the State.ArkansasVisitarkansaslittle missouri fallslittle missouri riverouachita natinal forestouachitasfallwaterfall

PLUM BAYOU LOG HOUSE - Historic Arkansas Museum - Department of Arkansas Heritage - June 2016
In 1856, the house was found abandoned and in great disrepair by the Pemberton family, which repaired it when they first moved from North Carolina to Arkansas. Logs from ancient cypress were used, and the chimneys were made of brick. The house was moved 20 miles in the 1970's, to its current location on the northern side of the museum.
1850'S FARMSTEAD
This was the Pemberton family's main house, and it's next to the log house, their original home. This is a working farm; it has a barn, a slave cabin, privy, smokehouse, blacksmith shop and raised garden beds. The Farmstead was home not only to the Pembertons, but to their slave, John Perry and his wife and two children. After the War, the Perrys elected to stay, becoming prosperous as farmers. The Farmstead is surrounded by a snake rail fence, common in the 1850's, added in 2005 to the property, as were the gardens and two log structures.
As a side note, I really researched this building that's behind the main cabin, its my belief that this was the original log cabin, and maybe became the slave house. I'll keep researching and will correct it as I find out. By shooting this in black and white I feel it portrays the past better. I hope you like my take on a piece of Arkansas History.visitarkansasArkansashistorymuseumartlandscapephotographyloghomecabin

Tower to the Heavens - Queen Wilhelmina State Park - June 2016
Just when you think you captured ever view from the mountain it throws you something new, the trick is to be ready for it or anything. To catch the magic of light has a lot to do with luck, in the blink of a moment you can see the most amazing sunrays bursting through the clouds and by the time you have your camera out its gone. Its a flurry of changing lenses and on tripod off tripod, or zipping to the next overlook constantly asking yourself did I make the right choice, or is there something better ahead? Maybe I should stop and enjoy, lol but that's not my style. :)

The Old Mill - North Little Rock, Arkansas - Spring 2016
Famous for its appearance in the opening credits of the 1939 classic movie Gone with the Wind, the Old Mill in the five-acre T. R. Pugh Memorial Park in North Little Rock (Pulaski County) contains the work of noted Mexican sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez, who perfected the folk art style known as faux bois (fake wood) by crafting reinforced concrete to resemble petrified logs. Justin Matthews, the developer of the town’s Park Hill and Lakewood subdivisions, hired Rodriguez in 1932 to create a tourist attraction for his new suburban development. Formally named Pugh’s Mill in honor of Matthews’s lifelong friend Thomas R. Pugh, the mill features a two-story stone building, bridges, benches, and other examples of Rodriguez’s art, all designed to look like an abandoned nineteenth-century gristmill. - Sandra Taylor Smith
